About The Theatre Royal Winchester

Theatre Royal Winchester is an intimate and beautiful Edwardian-style theatre in the city centre. It is the only surviving cine-variety theatre in the country.

Theatre Royal Winchester events include a wide range of the best touring drama, stand up comedy, dance, music, talks and cabaret as well as children’s performances, traditional family pantomime and community events. There’s sure to be something for you to enjoy.

Theatre Royal Winchester is run by the arts and education charity Play to the Crowd (Charity no 1077139) who also run Hat Fair – the Outdoor Arts festival and Playmakers – a programme of community engagement and creative learning activities and projects.

Hat Fair Festival is the UK’s longest continually running festival of Outdoor Arts. Over 3 days each summer audiences enjoy around 200 performances throughout Winchester city centre.

By Car

Theatre Royal Winchester is situated in Winchester city centre. Travelling on the M3 from Southampton take Exit 11, travelling from Basingstoke and London take Exit 9 and follow signs to the city centre. Alternatively, let the sat-nav do the work by using the postcode SO23 8SB.

Jewry Street and Tower Street Car Parks are the closest to the theatre. If you are attending a matinée or morning performance you may wish to consider using Winchester’s Park & Ride service.

 

By Rail

Theatre Royal Winchester is a short walk (about 5 mins) from Winchester railway station along City Road to Jewry Street. Trains run directly from London Waterloo (55 mins), Basingstoke (20 mins) and Southampton (15 mins) as well as many other line stations.

By Bus

There are good bus links into the city run by Bluestar and Stagecoach.
