Theatre Royal Winchester is looking forward to a host of exciting family shows and fun children’s activities that will keep everyone entertained during the school half term holidays later this month.
Adventurers will adore Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs: The Magic Cutlass (Sat 26 Oct), which sees schoolboy hero Flinn attempting to rescue his kidnapped friends who have been forced to hunt for the magic cutlass by the tyrannical Mr T-Rex! Based on Giles Andreae’s award-winning book, this stage adaptation is full of catchy songs and music and features a giant dinosaur and pirates.
Next, the world-famous story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince (Mon 28 – Tue 29 Oct) – is retold through dance. A stranded pilot tells how the Prince leaves behind his tiny asteroid to journey through the universe to a baffling world of grown-ups. Performed by Luca Silvestrini’s dance company Protein, The Little Prince features a vibrant set and costumes.
While fans of Julia Donaldson – young and old – will be delighted to see the UK’s best-selling author, with a cast of four others, perform a show of favourite stories in The Gruffalo, The Witch and The Warthog with Julia Donaldson (Thu 31 Oct – Sat 2 Nov). With the help of songs and puppetry they will bring to life such classics as Room on the Broom, The Gruffalo and The Cook and The King.
There are also two crafts sessions children can take part in, inspired by The Little Prince and Julia Donaldson’s show.
On Tuesday 29 October, The Little Prince and the Moon Family Crafts gives children seeing the show a chance to make a hanging asteroid home for the prince; while youngsters set to watch Julia Donaldson on Friday 1 November can create crafts inspired by her books in the aptly named workshop – The Gruffalo, The Witch and the Workshop!
Children and young people aged 8 – 18 can also get involved in Sing It! In a Day, on Wednesday 30 October. This gives them the opportunity to spend the day singing and rehearsing Musical Theatre songs, which they will perform on stage at the end of the day to family and friends. No previous experience is necessary for this fun and entertaining workshop.
