About this attraction
Southampton City Art Gallery is a fantastic hidden gem, with regularly rotating displays featuring works from Southampton’s amazing and diverse collection of fine art, national touring exhibitions and work by local artists.
There’s also a range of creative workshops and activities to suit all ages all year round. Amazingly, the gallery is free to visit – you’ll find them in the heart of the Southampton’s cultural quarter.
History
The art gallery was founded in 1911 after a generous bequeathment from local pharmacist and Justice of the Peace, Robert Chipperfield. His will ensured that a variety of works of art could be purchased to begin the gallery’s impressive collection. Southampton City Art Gallery found its permanent home in 1939 in the Civic Centre building. Thanks to a succession of bequests and gifts, the gallery has gone from strength to strength, building its collection of fine art to over 5,300 pieces.
