September 2022 attractions in Hampshire to beat the back to school blues

The children are back at school but the summer fun doesn’t have to end there! We’ve compiled some great ideas to help you find out what’s on in September at Hampshire attractions. Explore some heritage with free open days, make the most of the warm summer days by being outdoors and be entertained with lots of shows and concerts planned for the month.

History & Heritage 

Until 4 September, visit History Saves the World! at Milestones Museum, Basingstoke. With plenty to make, do and discover, find out if we can we be greener by learning from our past. Milestones will also welcome Cobbles and Cogs: Steampunk Family Weekend 10th – 11th September. Browse fantastic trade stalls throughout the museum, with music from the buskers and an abundance of buffoonery with games for all to enjoy. Pay Milestones admission once, visit all year!

The Watercress Line opens its stations on 10th & 11th September for its annual Open Weekend! This will give visitors the opportunity to view current restoration projects at the railway’s main engineering hub at Ropley, as well as a chance to get up close to locomotives in a guided tour of the yard.

The trains come to the Brickworks Museum this September 25th with miniature railway rides, model train layouts and the Brickworks Museum machinery in full steam. There will be fun for all the family including the museum’s two play areas, craft stalls and their working vintage arcade.

Free Heritage Open Days 

Heritage Open Days take place from 9th – 18th September and entry to attractions participating is absolutely free! See hidden places and try out new experiences.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is taking part in Heritage Open Days. Get a behind the scenes’ tour of the newly opened Storehouse 12 collections centre in the National Museum of the Royal Navy on 9th September, on the 13th & 15th September see the only surviving sail from the Battle of the Trafalgar or take part in behind the scenes tours, 15th – 18th September, of The Mary Rose Museum’s Reserve Collection

On 15th September, explore the home and gardens of one of Britain’s most innovative naturalists Gilbert White. Learn about the father of ecology whilst enjoying a great day out for free! 

Take the opportunity to explore the Brickworks Museum on 15th September and find out about 125 years of brickmaking in Hampshire.

Southampton’s heritage steamship, SS Shieldhall will be open for free tours on Sat 17 September between 10am – 3pm as part of the annual Heritage Open Days, and also offers a ticketed cruise between 4pm – 6pm.

September 1st, Katherine MacInnes will give a talk on her book ‘Snow Widows’ at Gilbert White’s House & Gardens and will reveal the story of the women the Terra Nova expedition left behind. 

Chapterhouse Theatre Company returns to Chawton House on Friday 2 September with an outdoor performance of Jane Austen’s classic romance Pride and Prejudice. Jodie Rose will be running two Modern Dip Pen Calligraphy Workshops, offering participants the opportunity to learn the basics and develop their own calligraphy style.  

The world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra will be at the New Theatre Royal on 4th September and audiences of all ages will enjoy the sounds of this Big Band. Now the kids have gone back to school it’s time for the mother of all shows – the stuff no one tells you about parenthood until it’s too late – Mum’s the Word is showing on 14th September and it’s perfectly relatable for all parenting figures!

Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors is ‘history with the nasty bits in’. Meet horrible Henries, hear the legends (and the lies!) about the torturing Tudors. There are headless wives, meet Bloody Mary and survive the Spanish Armada as they launch their attack! Saturday 10th to Sunday 11th September, various times, recommended age 5+.

Join The Ageas Bowl this September for back-to-back outdoor concerts, One Night Of Neil and An Evening Of Queen! Sing and dance as the stars of London’s West End perform stunning tributes to the magical Neil Diamond and rock icons Queen!

From 17th September, grab your exclusive ticket to Science Starz, a brand-new free science talent show. Watch as instruments come to life through exciting experiments. Be wowed by the dancing fire of the Ruben’s tube and the mind-blowing, light-bending laser harp (above image). And vote for who will be crowned the reality show winner.

Playmakers Youth Theatre returns this September with sessions for children and young people aged from School Year 4 to 25 years. Members work with local, industry professionals to devise and perform their own, original pieces of work, while building confidence, developing performance and theatre-making skills and learning to collaborate with others.

Join the Hawk Conservancy Trust on Saturday September 3, where they’ll be celebrating International Vulture Awareness Day! Find out more about these incredible birds at world-class flying displays, talks and activities running throughout the day, and help raise funds for their vital work helping to conserve vultures in the wild.

Head to your local country park for a breath of fresh air this September. See the crisp colours changing on the trees at Royal Victoria Country Park whilst enjoying the playgrounds and taking a trip on the miniature train.
