Meet ‘the strongest girl in the world’, Pippi Longstocking at Theatre Royal Winchester

August 23, 2023

Children and fans of a good story – young and old – are invited to meet ‘the strongest girl in the world’, Pippi Longstocking, at Theatre Royal Winchester on Sunday 10 September.

Pippi is a nine-year-old girl who brings mischief and confusion to the people of a traditional town when she comes to live in her new home with her monkey and horse but without parents or rules! This brave and fearless daughter of a swashbuckling pirate captain, Pippi takes charge of her crazy adventures with her two new friends, Tommy and Annika.

The character of Pippi Longstocking was invented by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren who told her tales of this little girl to her children during the war years. Lindgren is one of the most popular authors in the world – with over 165 million copies of her books sold in over 100 languages. Now, her stories are being told in this playful solo performance – with audience participation – by actress Sofie Miller who has performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and as an avid reader, thought she was Pippi, growing up!

The show was created by Olivier award-winning film and theatre director, Helena Middleton (Mog the Forgetful Cat, Hey Duggee The Live Theatre Show, Witness for the Prosecution) with original music by Brook Tate – who has worked closely with the Bristol Old Vic and The Salisbury Playhouse; and has been adapted for the stage by acclaimed storyteller Danyah Miller – whose I Believe in Unicorns by Michael Morpurgo has run on the West End.

Pippi Longstocking has long inspired fans around the world including the former First Lady Michelle Obama and singers Lady Gaga and Cerys Matthews to name a few; and now it’s Winchester’s turn to discover why everyone loves the self-sufficient and quick-witted Pippi.

Following the show, young audiences can take part in a post-show Pippi inspired treasure hunt lasting approximately 15 minutes.

Meet Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Sunday 10 September at 11am. Recommended age: 4 – 9. For more information or to book tickets visit theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
