Woven Rope Trivet Making

Rope/string/fibre has arguably been the most useful, important and long-lasting invention in our shared history. Take part in an endangered heritage craft, and work in a small group to twist your own rope using a hand-powered mechanism. Learn from experienced rope maker Sue Pennison as you are guided to create your own heatproof rope mat – a useful addition to any home! You may wish to bring a picnic, and before / after your session enjoy the surroundings and views of Butser Ancient Farm, nestled in the South Downs National Park.

Choose from a morning OR afternoon session: 10am – 12:30pm / 1pm – 3:30pm

About the workshop

• Half-day workshop, 10am – 12:30pm OR 1pm – 3:30pm

• Create a traditional rope mat made with a natural hemp rope (formed by participants during the session). Approx 20cm diameter. Heatproof for domestic purposes.

• Relaxing & welcoming, female-led & beginner-friendly, small group size

• Set in the unique surroundings of a recreated Roman Villa!

Sue Pennison is the Chair of the Trustees of the International Guild of Knot Tyers and is enthusiastic about preserving and sharing the skills and heritage of rope making and knot tying. She is a traditional rope maker and yacht rigger and makes knotted items on commission.

Included in your ticket

Entrance to the farm, a day’s tuition and expertise, and all the tools and materials necessary to create a functional and beautiful trivet from hand-made rope.

Workshop info

Please wear sensible clothing and footwear for this workshop. Lunch is not included, although sandwiches (subject to availability), hot and cold drinks, and snacks are sold in our gift shop. We recommend that you bring a picnic to enjoy fireside in your choice of ancient house from around the site!

This workshop is intended for adults, but suitable for ages 16+. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult with a ticket.
