Snow Widows with Katherine MacInnes
Gilbert White’s House & Garden

Based on Katherine MacInnes 2022 book Snow Widows which tells the story of the women the Terra Nova expedition left behind. MacInnes will join us in Selborne, (the Field Studies Centre) for a one of a kind talk focusing on her research on Caroline Oates.
Captain Lawrence Oates’ was a bachelor who confided only in his mother. Only Caroline really knew her son’s opinion of Captain Scott and the British Antarctic Expedition. Sue Limb Oates’s biographer and Bryan Oates, his nephew have both praised Snow Widows for its integrity, timely revelations and uncanny insight.
This is the story of the South Pole told for the first time, not through the official expedition journals but through uncensored letters and notes to their women left behind.
