This year marks 250 years since the artist Samuel Hieronymous Grimm (1733-1794) came to Selborne to work on the art that would eventually illustrate The Natural History of Selborne (1789).

Grimm, a Swiss born landscape artist was commissioned by Gilbert White to come to Selborne for one month to capture the beauty of the village in watercolour. Grimm arrived on the 7th July 1776 and worked almost solidly for 28 days capturing views of Selborne and its surrounding areas.

This exhibition will chronicle the visit, White’s enjoyment of acting Artist’s patron, discuss the scenes Grimm captured and wonder whether Gilbert White himself maybe hidden in some of the paintings.
