Dinosaurs invade Southampton’s SeaCity Museum

Dinosaurs may have taken over the world’s cinema screens this summer but they have also stomped into Southampton, with a brand new exhibition at the SeaCity Museum.

DINO ENCOUNTER is officially open and features large animatronic dinosaurs on loan from the Natural History Museum, meaning Hampshire residents don’t have to go far to get a slice of real –life Jurassic action this summer. As soon as guests walk into the museum’s pavilion they are transported back to the land that time forgot, with a giant dinosaur skull and skeleton greeting them. There are dinosaur fossils, dressing up stations, an interactive area and dinosaur themed games and books.

The exhibition, which runs until September 27, gives an insight into the lives and work of modern day paleontologists and features research from the University of Southampton’s Ocean and Earth Science Department.

There will be a number of special events throughout the summer including:

Dinosaur Exhibition Tour Sat 18 July & Sat 15 Aug / SeaCity / 11-12pm / £5 / Pre-book Discover more about dinosaurs and marine reptiles with this fascinating exhibition tour led by a palaeontologist.

Toddler Time (Age 18mths-4yrs) Thursdays 30 July – Dino Explorers 20 Aug – Dino Roars! SeaCity / 10.30-11.30am / £3.50 Pre-book Calling all active toddlers! Join us for a story and rhymes, discover museum objects and be mini-explorers around the museum.

Designosaur – Family Workshop (Age 3+) Mon 27 Jul / SeaCity / 10.30am-12noon or 1-2.30pm / £5 / Pre-book Learn about different types of dinosaurs and then design your own – it can be scary, colourful, large or small! You will then create a sculpture of your creature to take home.

Do-you-think-he-saurus (Age 4+) Wed 29 July / SeaCity / 10.30am- 12.30noon or 1.30-3.30pm / £6 /Pre-book Get modelling and create a fantastic T-Rex head that you can wear and scare your friends.

Dinosaur Scrapbooking (Age 4-11) Wed 5 Aug / SeaCity / 10am-12noon OR 1-3pm / £5 / Pre-book Have fun learning about dinosaurs, before creating your own scrapbooks to take home using instant printers and craft materials. Please bring a digital camera with a removable SD card.

Dinosaur drawing (Age 8-15) Wed 12 Aug / SeaCity / 10.30am-3.30pm £15 / Pre-book Join paleo-artist Mo Hassan to learn how to draw prehistoric creatures using pen, pencil, and digital illustration.

Tri-skele-tops (Age 6+) Mon 24 Aug / SeaCity / 10.30am-12.30noon or 1.30-3.30pm / £6 / Pre-book / Age 6+/ Join us and create fabulous wire dinosaur skeleton sculptures.

Jurassic Jaws (Age 8-13) Tues 25 Aug / SeaCity / 10.30am-3pm / £20/ Pre-book Enjoy getting messy and make your own terrifying dinosaur jaw bone, complete with Jurassic sized gnashers.

DINO ENCOUNTER is at SeaCity Museum until September 27 and is part of Hampshire Cultural Trust’s wider DINOFEST2015, a series of roarsome dinosaur-themed exhibitions and events across the county this year.

To celebrate DINOFEST2015 Hampshire Cultural Trust is running a number of competitions, including Dino Tracker, where participants could win a real ‘Night at the Museum’ with a ticket to Dino Snores at the Natural History Museum in London. Hampshire Cultural Trust Cultural Cards and a family trip to Blackgang Chine on the Isle of Wight are also up for grabs.
