About This Attraction

Sitting high and proud at the heart of the Isle of Wight, Carisbrooke Castle has been an artillery fortress, king’s prison and a royal summer residence. Today it’s the quintessential romantic castle, with lots to see and enjoy in the fresh open air. Experience far reaching panoramic views from high castle walls, or wander the moat to discover King Charles I’s bowling green. Enjoy the tranquil Princess Beatrice Garden, before meeting the famous Carisbrooke donkeys.

Why should I visit?

    • Carisbrooke is an impressive fortress seeped in history. It’s “The Island’s Castle” and one of the Isle of Wight’s most important cultural destinations.
    • Carisbrooke has many historical stories to tell, most famously it is the castle that Charles I tried to escape from whilst being imprisoned during the civil war.
    • Visitors can walk around the castle battlements and enjoy panoramic views across the Isle of Wight from the high castle keep.
    • Carisbrooke also has charming gardens and grounds to explore and there are also walks you can do from the castle around the surrounding landscape.
    • Other top attractions at the site is Charles I bowling green, the Princess Beatrice Garden, Chapel and Great Hall.

10 minute Hovercraft service from Portsmouth – Ryde (Hovertravel), with easy bus links to East Cowes.

On IoW take Southern Vectis 6, 7, 12, 38 pass nearby to within 1⁄4 mile

  • Carisbrooke provides a hands-on family experience where children can explore, conquer, climb, walk the wall whilst learning about the castles history as a family.
  • Carisbrooke has become famous for its much loved donkeys, who live on site and perform regular demonstrations of using the tread well to bring water from the castle well.
  • Through summer, Carisbrooke regularly hosts events for children including jousts and family days.
