Outdoor fun

Itchen Valley Country Park has three Outdoor Theatre productions running – David Walliams’ Awful Auntie Family Show 4pm on Sunday 14th, Wind in the Willows Family Show 3.30pm on Friday 18th and Much Ado About Murder 7.30pm on Monday 29th

Exbury Gardens is the venue for some exciting live music and theatre this August. Take a step back in time on Sunday, 14th August as we meet Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters in Pride and Prejudice. The Festival of Music takes place on Friday, 19th August when 21 st Century Queen and Elton John will take the stage and then on Saturday, 20th August it will be all about 21st Century Abba.

This August, Carisbrooke Castle plays host to Legendary Jousts and Knights’ Tournaments. Experience the drama for yourself, see swords clash and lances shatter, and hear the roar of the crowd. Don’t miss one of history’s most spectacular sporting contests. 

Discover watersports at Calshot. Enjoy the paddlesports experiences with kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (and wetsuits) available to hire. Children as young as five can join in with an adult. Alternatively, take in the views while sailing or windsurfing. If new to the sport, ‘experiences’ are the perfect way for beginners to learn the basic skills to get up and running on the water in no time. 

Chawton House

Escape to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi on 29 August, with a screening of the box office hit Mamma Mia 2! Here We Go Again! on the South Lawn at Chawton House. Admire the sunset and sing and dance the night away.  

Catch the BRICKOSAURS! Evolution brick sculptures at Marwell Zoo before it’s too late! The impressive collection includes a mosasaur emerging from the water, seven-metre-long Spinosaurus, and a Brachiosaurus who towers over the zoo – the tallest brick sculpture Marwell has had. Call the royal guard! The Queen’s Knickers is showing at New Theatre Royal Portsmouth on Wednesday 3rd August and it’s the perfect funny family outing. Also in August you can find the New Theatre Royal Team at Victorious Festival this August for panto activities galore. 

8th – 12th August MAST Mayflower Studios will be home to Blue Apple Theatre’s Summer School. A place to experience professional drama, dance, and singing classes for people with learning disabilities. Make new friends and learn theatre skills this summer.

Gilbert White’s House & Gardens is hosting an evening of hit after hit with songs you know and love from Waterloo, Mamma Mia, Take a Chance on Me, Super Trouper. 21st Century Abba faithfully recreates all the greatest hits of one of the world’s most famous group combining stunning vocals, live musicians, and glittering costumes on 14th August.

The nationally renowned youth dance company FuzzyLogic present The Doorman at Theatre Royal Winchester on 20th August. Ten hopeful strangers, each with their own unique story to tell, arrive at a mysterious door but…. the door will only open for those who prove worthy. Enigmatic characters and high-energy dance theatre in this rollercoaster ride to redemption!

Fun for all the family, an outdoor theatre performance of Cinderella will take place in the Lower Deanery Garden of Winchester Cathedral, 21st August, 7pm. Join family and friends for what promises to be an evening of theatre and song; picnic under a summer sky and enjoy this classic fairytale. Tickets start at £11.

Indoor adventures

Delve into the fascinating world of electricity in a brand new free live show, Sparks at Winchester Science Centre. Watch as static electricity and currents are brought to life through fun experiments. And discover the science that inspired the new Disney and Pixar movie, Lightyear. Experience a spaceship launch demo and fact-filled Space Ranger trail.

Whitchurch Silk Mill is holding both family and adult weaving workshops on the 18th (book in advance), and a free performance of dance, music, and readings on the 20th, both hosted by weaver Rezia Wahid MBE. They will also be running their kids crafting Make & Take sessions throughout the summer, which are free with admission.

Milestones Pier

Head to SeaCity Museum in August and discover Titanic family workshops, exhibition guided tour, kids culture club, clock tower tour, workshops and more!

Join Army Flying Museum for ‘Weather’ and ‘Work Out’ themed craft activities this summer holidays every weekday from 10.30 -13.30 and on selected days Genie Lab will be back with some crazy science fun.

Visit the Milestones Museum Pier! Experience the unique Milestones Pier complete with a traditional penny arcade! Have a go on vintage amusement machines, try your hand at the claw grab to win a prize, laugh at your friends in the funfair mirrors and take a snap in the seaside scenes!

Vehicles at The Brickworks Museum is back on August 14th – with buses and cars in the courtyard, and trains on the rails. As if that wasn’t enough, the museum will be open and in steam, they have two children’s play areas, interactive exhibits and fascinating displays.
