24 things to do in the Summer Half-Term holidays!

Keeping the kids entertained during half term school holidays can be a challenge. But help is at hand, as the Summer Half-Term brings a whole array of special events, top family attractions, activities and days out!

Here are 24 ideas for things to do with kids this May Half-Term…

  1. Take the Top Trumps Challenge at Marwell Zoo! You’ll receive a free Top Trumps card and fun trail, so you can compare the scores on your card to giant cards around the park, all representing amazing animal species!
  2. Discover Mottisfont’s gardens and design your own with a creative trail, full of imaginative activities. Mottisfont are creating a new garden and ow it’s your turn – what would you do if you could make any garden you wanted? Would you fill it with swings and slides, or rollercoasters and rockets? Your design journey starts now! Follow the trail around Mottisfont’s garden and fill up your sheet with ideas…
  3. New for 2018 at Paultons Park is Little Africa! Come and discover the amazing animals and birds of the African Savannah. See the Meerkats or visit the nocturnal house to see the Fennec Foxes, and many more fascinating species!
  4. Enter the daring realm of spies and soldiers during WWII! Follow a trail of hidden car parts, crack the coded message, dress up as a soldier and see wartime vehicles at Beaulieu this half-term.
  5. Yeeeehaaaw! Blackgang Chine’s wild west week returns once again this May Half-Term. Join them every day from 26th May until 3rd June for some rootin’ tootin’ wild west fun! Whether you’re an outlaw on the run from the law or a wannabe sheriff trying to keep the town safe, take centre stage in your own Cowboy story!
  6. Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is committed to sparking curiosity in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). A science-themed holiday club for children age 5 – 9 is returning this Summer half-term! Up to 24 children will be able to enjoy an exciting daily programme of science-themed activities utilising the Centre, its surrounding green spaces and workshop rooms. Activities will include creating and running experiments, physical and mental games and challenges and arts-based activities to help explore and explain the world around us.
  7. This May half-term The Mary Rose is giving visitors young and old the chance to help recreate an iconic portrait of Henry VIII as a four metre tall LEGO® brick mosaic!

  9. Dive into the underwater world of Tropical Treasures and discover all the hidden gems of the oceans at Blue Reef Aquarium. From Rainbow Wrasse to shoals on mass, our oceans are full of Tropical Treasures! With exciting competitions and a Tropical Treasure Hunt, there’s plenty of family fun at Blue Reef Aquarium this May half-term!

  10. Head to the beautiful town of Newtown on the Isle of Wight on the 31st May for a Nature Walk. This gentle walk across grassy meadows, through ancient woodland and to the edges of the delicate saltmarsh is the perfect introduction to Newtown’s variety of wildlife and rich delicate habitat.   Along the way you can visit a Town Hall with a colourful past and discover butterflies flitting through the meadows.
  11. Discover the fascinating features of Portsmouth Harbour and the skills of the people who spend their time in Portsmouth. Listen to talks by inspirational people on our doorstep and join in on Emirates Spinnaker Tower’s ‘Catch me at the harbour trail’ and improve your harbour life knowledge!
  12. Enjoy exploring Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Hampshire with fun trails, have a go at Pond Dipping and joining cooking over the campfire with Family Bushcraft.
  13. Start half-term with a bang and catch some thrilling cricketing action when Hampshire face Kent in the Royal London One-Day Cup competition at the picture-perfect Ageas Bowl on Sunday 27th June. Continue to make the most of any early summer sunshine with a family day out at the Ageas Bowl’s magnificent 18-hole Boundary Lakes Golf Course, with junior golf lessons available for all abilities.
  14. At the New Forest Wildlife Park half term is also Love Your Zoo week and Wednesday 30th May is International Otter Awareness Day.  So lots of otters things to do including quizzes, mask making,  badge making and animal encounters.
  15. BAFTA award-winning CBeebies duo Sarah and Duck come to Nuffield Southampton Theatres Campus on 2-3 June in the live children’s stage show Sarah and Duck’s Big Top Birthday, featuring a fantastic blend of puppetry, storytelling and music.
  16. Meet the Burrowers’ in all new immersive aviary at the Hawk Conservancy Trust; NEW from summer 2018. Come face to face with our cute and curious Burrowing Owls or even book on to an extra special experience to get close to the full team of owls!
  17. Birdworld will be supporting Love Your Zoo Week between 30th May – 2nd June. Throughout the week, there will be lots of additional talks, arts and crafts and face painting!
  18. There’s a Dinosaur theme this half term at Royal Victoria Country Park. Have a go at the self-guided ‘Dinosaur Roar!’ trail which is available throughout the week. Toddlers can enjoy an animated re-telling of the ‘Harry and the Dinosaur’ story on 29th or 30th May (booking is essential).
  19. Start your half term off with a bang at Gilbert White & The Oates Collections’ Nature Festival on the 28th May. A day filled with nature activities and fun. You never know what you’ll discover!
  20. The fabulous Creature Teachers are at Longdown Activity Farm on the 31st May with their menagerie of amazing animals. Hold a barn owl, and meet millipedes, rats, giant snails, lizards, snakes, and many other fascinating creatures too. Touch, hold, and learn about these fantastic creatures during close-up encounter sessions scheduled from 11:30am to 3:30pm.
  21. Steamship Shieldhall commences her 2017 sailing season with a Southampton Docks Cruise on Sat 26 May, followed by a Titanic themed cruise with guest speaker Ann Victoria Roberts on Sun 27 May.
  22. Hollycombe Steam in the Country has a busy May programme, with Magic Lantern Shows in the Bioscope on May 6-7; Steam in Miniature on May 19-20 and the return of Hollcombe’s Steam Festival on 26-28 May.
  23. Design and print your own sheet of wrapping paper at The Brickworks Museum on Wednesday May 30th between 12 noon and 2pm. Entrance fee applies; £2 donation per child. No need to book, just drop in! Whilst stock lasts.
  24. Explore the beautiful New Forest National Park by bike and the stunning Beaulieu River by boat in this action-packed family adventure! A Family Adventure Day with New Forest Activities includes a full day’s bike hire and a 90 minute canoeing tour of the river. Available all Summer long!
