Explore more than 1000 years of history in Europe’s longest medieval Cathedral. Discover the beautiful illuminated Winchester Bible, 12th-century wall paintings, medieval carvings, contemporary art and the awe and wonder of this magnificent building. Find out how a diver saved the Cathedral from collapse and how Jane Austen came to be buried in the nave.
Family fun
A free children’s trail, written by a professional children’s writer, offers a fun and informative look at the Cathedral and introduces some of the characters associated with its colourful past and present. Tour with the experts
Cathedral Tour: A general history and overview of the Cathedral. Tours take approximately 1h. Tours run each hour from 10am – 3pm Monday - Saturday.
Tower Tour: Climb the tower and admire the stunning views across the city and as far as the Isle of Wight. Explore the bell chamber and walk the entire nave roof with its tremendous timbers. Tours take approximately 1h 30m (restricted to people aged 12-70). Parts of the tour include narrow stairwells and heights.

Crypt Tour: Explore the fascinating Crypt, which houses the acclaimed Sound II sculpture by Antony Gormely. Tours run daily at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm Monday – Saturday. Tours will be cancelled if the crypt is flooded.

A wide range of events take place throughout the year. From classical concerts, open-air theatre and themed lunches to children’s holiday activities, a major Christmas market and real ice rink, there really is something for everyone to enjoy. The Cathedral Café, with its pretty garden and open-air terrace, is the perfect place to stop for mid-morning coffee and pastry, delicious homemade lunch or Hampshire cream tea. The Cathedral Shop sells a wide range of unique gifts, souvenirs and CDs of the famous Cathedral Choir.
Opening times
The Cathedral is open from 9am - 5pm Monday - Saturday and 12.30pm - 3pm Sunday, but these times may occasionally vary for special services and events.
