The Spinnaker Tower's fantastic 'Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games' tournament ended with a grand finale today as 28 of the region's best Nintendo Wii athletes took part in the Final of the month-long event. With approximately 1700 contenders taking part, the tournament has captured the imaginations of young and old alike and has attracted competitors from 27 different nationalities!
All of the finalists won medals and prizes but the overall winner of this spectacular contest, was William Beaver, aged 11, from Burgess Hill, West Sussex. He achieved the highest score in the Dream Race game, beating six other hopeful Grand Finalists to the post. The British national anthem was played for him at the top of the Tower during the closing ceremony, and even better, William has won tickets to a sporting event of his choice up to the value of £500! He commented: "I'm really happy I won and I think I'm going to spend the money on taking my family to see the rugby at Twickenham - it's a dream come true really!"
Jonathan Fieldhouse, 10 yrs, from Eastbourne came second, and Callum Williams White, 13 yrs, from Dorchester came third. The tournament drew to a close at 1.30pm today but for those who haven't had a chance to play yet, the Nintendo Wii pods will be available on View Deck 1 of the iconic Spinnaker Tower for people to play between 1.00pm and 5.00pm, right up to and including 31 August! And with the weather being so typically British, it may just be the perfect opportunity to make the most of the rest of the summer holidays by getting out and about while still escaping the rain!
The Spinnaker Tower is open daily from 10am (excluding Christmas Day). See www.spinnakertower.co.uk or call 02392 857520 to book in advance or to find out more!
