In readiness for Saturday's special 'Giant Sleepover', Reuben Taylor, aged 7 yrs, Megan Barker, aged 7 yrs and Zoe Atkin, aged 8 yrs from Lyndhurst Junior School, Portsmouth, will be practising their sleeping skills on View Deck One, with sleeping bags in tow. They will be accompanied by Tamsyn Thomas - teacher at the school, and will available for photographs and interviews.
The Spinnaker Tower is set to play host to 50 local school kids overnight on Saturday 14 June in aid of the nationwide Giant Sleepover event organised by Save the Children. Pupils from Lyndhurst Junior School will be sleeping on View Deck One of the spectacular Tower which means a few lucky and intrepid youngsters will get to sleep on Europe's largest glass floor - if they dare!
Up to now, only two adults have ever slept at the top of the tower (James Perry and Louise Moore who won a Valentines competition in 2007) so the pupils will be the first young people to enjoy the unique experience. The children will be bedding down to Portsmouth's glittering night time skyline shortly after 10.00pm and will be rising to the amazing early morning views with breakfast and a 30-minute wake-up fitness class at 7.30am on Sunday morning thanks to Twenty4Seven Fitness.
UK-wide in total, 50,000 people of whom some 43,000 kids aged 5 to 15 years will be taking part in an attempt to break the current Guinness World Record for the biggest simultaneous sleepover across multiple locations. Sleepovers are taking place at a range of venues including schools, youth group halls and camping grounds, but in addition there are a number of unique sleepover locations of which the iconic Spinnaker Tower is one, along with the London Dungeons, Warwick Castle and Trentham Monkey Forest, to name just a few.
Those involved are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for Save the Children's critical emergency work - the Children's Emergencies Fund (CEF) which helps out in disaster situations such as the recent cyclone in Myanmar (Burma) with access to the urgent food, clean water, shelter and support needed. Well-wishers can donate to the fund directly through the Giant Sleepover website - www.giantsleepover.com .
Heather Deeley, Marketing Manager at the Spinnaker Tower said: "We're very glad to be supporting such an excellent cause and delighted that these children will have the experience of a lifetime by sleeping overnight at such a remarkably iconic and stylish venue - it's definitely one to tell the grandchildren eventually!"
The Spinnaker Tower is open daily from 10am (excluding Christmas Day). See www.spinnakertower.co.uk or call 02392 857520 to book in advance or to find out more!
