Members of the Portsmouth Cathedral Choir will be performing at the top of the iconic Spinnaker Tower as part of their Ascension Day celebrations on Thursday 1 May. The private act of worship will take place at 8.15am, 100 metres above Portsmouth Harbour on the Spinnaker Tower's View Deck 1, with twenty-four boys and twelve men from the cathedral choir as well as fifteen people who will have the privilege of being the congregation. The choral group will be performing the music of Thomas Weelkes 'Alleluia, I heard a voice from heaven', to the spectacular backdrop of the twinkling panoramic views of the Solent on this special occasion. The Dean of Portsmouth, Very Revd David Brindley, said; "We feel it's important to continue the ancient tradition that is associated with the Ascension Day service. Originally of course, the service would take place on the top of the church tower but for a modern twist, I can think of nowhere more fitting or special to mark this day than by singing atop one of the UK tallest landmarks - the spectacular Spinnaker Tower. The piece that will be performed by the choir is also renowned for it's soaring top notes which makes it very appropriate." The Spinnaker Tower is open daily from 10am (excluding Christmas Day).
