Portsmouth museum opens its doors to raise awareness of the transatlantic slave trade in association with Black History Month

This October, the Royal Naval Museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will be opening its doors to visitors who would like to learn more about the transatlantic slave trade and the Royal Navy’s role in putting an end to it as part of Black History Month.

Black History Month (BHM) is an annual event held every October in Britain to promote knowledge of Black History, culture and heritage and lots of attractions across the UK open their doors to help raise awareness of this influential event.

There are two ‘Understanding slavery object handling sessions’ taking place on Wednesday 8th and Monday 27th October between 2pm – 3pm. A number of original artefacts will be shown to visitors taking part in the sessions which includes original neck irons which were used during the slave trade. This is a unique opportunity as many of the items are not normally on display to the public. The sessions are free to enjoy with a valid attraction ticket.

Visitors will also be able to join in with the Diwali and Hindu New Year celebrations by creating the Rangoli star patterns and star maps which links into Indian culture. These stars are said to welcome guests and good spirits into your home. This activity is taking place in the Royal Naval Museum on Wednesday 29th October from 11-1pm and 2-3pm.

The grand Finale of the Voyage East celebrations which ties in nicely with Black History Month is the Lantern Procession which takes place on Friday 31st October. Children will have the chance to make their own paper-cut lanterns in free workshops which are taking place at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays during the October Half Term week. As part of the celebrations the Mary Rose Museum and Ship Hall and the Royal Naval Museum’s Victory Gallery will be offering a free, late-opening taster of their collections for those taking part in the procession from 4.30pm until 6pm.

The lanterns along with a mighty Emperor and Dhol Drummers will leave HMS Victory at 6pm and parade to the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays where there will be a spectacular firework finish.
