BBC Turn Back Time display at Milestones Museum

July 1st 2011 - April 1st 2012

11:00am Friday 01 Jul 2011 to Sunday 01 Apr 2012

Drop in to see the BBC Turn Back Time - The High Street display at Milestones Museum which tells the story of the British High street from the late Victorian era to the present day in a small interactive display.

The high street can tell us a lot about how British society has developed. In the BBC One series Turn Back Time - The High Street, seven different shop-keeping families were transported back to the high street of the past. A team from Hands on History organised 'pop-up shops' around the UK, where people could experience a 1930s grocers shop and find out how to research the history of their high street.

There are fantastic learning resources to accompany this display on the BBC website.

Normal admission charges apply to see this display. Museum closed Mondays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

INSPIRIT: Three Artists in the Forest at New Forest Centre

February 11th 2012 - March 11th 2012

Three artists capturing the spirit of the Forest through different senses.

Isobel Ross uses the sound of language to evoke a scene and the memory of it, whilst Caz Scott captures fleeting visions of her surroundings through quick and colourful sketches.

Joan Scott, on the other hand, creates work that is imbued with a sense of place as captured whilst out walking.

All three artists use a variety of medium to express their own very personal responses to the Forest.

Leap into love at The Spinnaker Tower

February 29th 2012

The Spinnaker Tower is sticking to tradition on Wednesday 29 February, welcoming ladies to the tower to propose to their partners during an evening entitled ‘Leap into Love at the Spinnaker Tower’.

The long-held tradition dictates that a woman can only propose to a man during a leap year, with many countries pinpointing the day of the proposal to 29 February. With this day only occurring every 1461 days, ladies have a small window of opportunity to pop the question!

Boasting floor-to-ceiling panoramic views of the breath-taking Portsmouth Harbour, the Spinnaker Tower is the perfect place for a proposal. Ladies can get down on one knee as the lights twinkle across the city and enjoy a glass of champagne to celebrate afterwards. The tower is exclusive to each couple, meaning the view deck will be reserved just for two, creating an intimate proposal venue.

A proposal slot costs £40 per couple and includes an exclusive view deck for 20 minutes plus two glasses of champagne to celebrate. For more information and to book, call the Spinnaker Tower Hospitality Team on 02392 857524.

Lachenalia (Leopard Lily) at Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway

March 10th 2012 - April 1st 2012

Exbury has a fine Lachenalia collection, which grows alongside the famous collection of of Nerine sarniensis, traditionally displayed during October. In 2012 the collection will be on show in the Gardens Five Arrows Gallery until Sunday 1 April, alongside a wider collection of South African bulbs.  Don't miss this spectacle which draws together a collection not seen anywhere previously in the world!

Lachenalias (also known as the Cape Cowslip or the Leopard Lily) are a family of about 120 species, belonging to the greater Hyacinthaceae family. They are winter flowering bulbs, which originate from the winter rainfall region of southern Africa, being dormant in summer, and growing and flowering in winter.

At Exbury the first lachenalias will begin to flower in autumn with the last ones flowering in early spring. However, the bulk of the lachenalias will flower from February to April.

Our fine collection also contains many of the lachenalia variations, extending to over 120 different species or variations. These cool greenhouse plants grow in a good range of colours, including the golden yellow Aloides, through to magenta, coral-red, yellow, purple and green colours. Many lachenalias have spotted leaves, whilst some have pustules like drops of water.

Primrose and Camellia Walks at Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway

March 24th 2012 - March 25th 2012

The floor of Exbury's woodland garden is covered with a beautiful primrose carpet during late March and early April. Major concentrations are found in the Home Wood running alongside the Cascades, and also in the Yard Wood Cascades near Jubilee Pond. A special walking trail will guide visitors to see the best primrose displays, and also showcases Exbury's award-winning Camellia's on the Old and New Camellia Walks. An afternoon guided walk (no additional cost) will depart the entrance at 2pm, lasting approx 1 1/2 hours, visiting the best areas and giving a wider background on the history of the Gardens.

The primrose is so-called because it is the ‘prima rosa’, the first flower or ‘rose’ of spring. Its subtle creamy pale yellow colour is much admired and copied by designers and paint manufacturers.
Shakespeare’s Ophelia, in Hamlet, warned her brother of the dangers of ‘the primrose path of dalliance’, while poet John Keats wrote of: ‘their smiles, wan as primroses gathered at midnight by chilly fingered spring’.

The primrose was Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli’s favourite flower and Primrose Day is traditionally celebrated on April 19, the anniversary of his death in 1881. The Primrose League, formed to promote conservative principles, was given its name in honour of his love for the flower.
Novelists often use the primrose to denote the time of year – The opening sentence of Richard Adams’ Watership Down is: ‘The primroses were over.’

Camellia sinensis is the plant used in the production of the world's major tea supplies.

Murder Mystery Evening: The Mystery of Jacob Harley at The Spinnaker Tower

March 30th 2012

A brand new evening event for the Spinnaker Tower - full of high drama, fabulous food and of course, our breathtaking views!

Crooge and his business partner were about to take the world by storm with the invention of their new Rocket Powered Chimney Sweep, when Harley was discovered dead. Whats more, the plans for the invention have gone missing.

Jacob Harley seems to have died after eating Cheese and Biscuits. But who could have taken the plans for the new invention? How does this affect Miss Favershams wedding plans? Why has Fagin been snooping around? And, most importantly, who put cyanide on Jacob’s cracker?

All of these questions and more will be answered our Murder Mystery Show “The Mystery of Jacob Harley”

Primrose and Camellia Walks at Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway

March 31st 2012 - April 1st 2012

Murder at St Vernon's at Watercress Line

May 5th 2012

It's 1949.  The war's been over for 4 years, but rationing's still in place.  St Vernon's Boarding School for Young Ladies is near to the village of Little Striving.  Academically the school has little to recommend it, and it is used as a dumping ground for the more difficult to place girls from wealthy families.

Headmaster, Mr Granville Stickler, has been at the school for many years, but over the past few months, has become rather vague, which causes great concern to another long-term member of staff, Matron, Miss Beatrice Dose.  St Vernon's is lucky to have a fe good staff members these include: English teacher Miss Vita Prout and Mr Nigel Rogers teaching art.  Wally Fremantle the caretaker/gardener and general jobs worth is a thorn in everyone's side.  We're going to meet a couple of the girls: the aristocratic but behaviourally challenged Millicent Marshall and horsy, nice but dim, Angela Frobisher-Stokes.

We join the staff and girls of St Vernon's outside the headmaster's study, on a weekday morning sometime after the end of term......

Prices
£75.00 per person (tables must be booked in multiples of 2). Each couple will receive a complimentary bottle of wine with their meal.

Outside Theatre: The Twits by Roald Dahl, performed by Illyria at Winchester Cathedral

May 26th 2012

Mr and Mrs Twit never wash, and they live in a smelly old caravan. Bored of playing cruel tricks on each other, they decide to open a circus. They capture a family of monkeys and brutally train them to perform in the ring. The local birds try to help by tricking the Twits into believing the world has turned upside down and dropping glue into their hair. Only when the Twits have met a sticky end, and only if the audience plays its part, can the monkeys finally be released.

Josephine the captain's daughter is in love with Ralph a common sailor, but her father wants her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Outside Theatre: Henry V by Shakespeare, performed by Illyria at Winchester Cathedral

July 21st 2012

In 2012 Illyria celebrates its 20th anniversary, the queen's diamond jubilee and a minor sporting event in London with Shakespeare's most popular historical drama. Full of patriotism, pageantry and poetry, it tells the gripping story of an inexperienced king who leads a small and weakened army into the battle of Agincourt against the might of the French battalions. With towering odds stacked against them the English win a sweeping victory. But after such an extraordinary military conquest, how will Henry fare with the greatest challenge of all - the conquest of Princess Catherine's heart?

In anticipation of a wonderful afternoon an innocent carnival atmosphere abounds. However a sinister plot is unfolding - Roger Smallpiece, the new Vicar, is about to open the fete, the blood curdling cry of 'Murder' is heard......

But who is the victim?

Who is the murderer?

But more importantly, who has won the picnic hamper in the raffle??

All will be revealed before the bunting is down at St Jude's, in a Fete Worse Than Death!
